We welcome you to our church community! Melbourne City Adventist Church
We offer different ways for you to connect with us, including The Exchange, our seeker-friendly church service where we explore a Christ-centred worldview.
How we worship
- We start at 3 pm with a focus on the community, greeting and getting to know each other better.
- Then we transition to our connection with God through a time of reflection and prayer, followed by the sermon.
- We then respond to what we have heard and experienced during a group discussion (4 – 4:30 pm) about the topics presented during the sermon.
- Refreshments are available, and often we provide opportunities to connect with one another after the service.
How to get to service
- We have recently moved to 27 Alfred Crescent, Fitzroy North. We are temporarily renting the North Fitzroy Seventh-day Adventist Church building.
- There is free street parking across the road at the Edinburgh Gardens.
- Tram 11 also stops at Alfred Cres/St Georges Rd (Stop #21), just a 3-minute walk to the church.
What to wear
- You can come as you are! There is no particular dress code for our service.
Children’s program
- There is a children’s program available during the discussion portion of the service.
Tithes & offerings
- We believe that financial giving is also an act of worship and want to provide the opportunity for whoever desires to contribute to the work of ministry. But there is no pressure to give. Tthere is an offering box at the back of the room for those wishing to give as well as an online portal allowing eGiving. The tithes go to the Victorian Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, of which we are a part, and the offerings and cash donations go towards furthering the various ministries and resource needs in our local church as well as in Victoria, Australia and around the world.
We Are…
An inner urban Adventist church community who enjoy connecting with God and each other
We Exist…
To create a safe place where individuals can explore a Christ-centred worldview.
We Believe…
God is a personal God who loves the world so much that He came to earth as Jesus, a man who lived in the first century. We believe Jesus lived a completely other-centred life without sin and that His example and teachings provide a worldview that redeems our brokenness as individuals and communities and creates wholeness spiritually, emotionally, mentally, physically, and relationally. We believe that Jesus also died, resurrected, and is mediating on our behalf, so that anyone who believes in Him can experience full forgiveness from sin and hope for a new kind of life. We believe that Jesus desires an intimate relationship with every person and that through His Spirit we can live meaningful lives motivated by love and understanding.
We Follow…
Christ’s example of incarnational ministry by building genuine relationships with those who live or work in the city. Having connected with them, we identify their felt needs and meet them individually and corporately as a church community. We also share our Christ-centred worldview and give them the opportunity to dialogue and engage with our beliefs. We take a wholistic approach to creating a space where these spiritual, social and physical needs are cared for. For example, we provide:
- Church services that include a time of response, dialogue, and fellowship
- Small group meetings that vary in topics and studies and provide meals and mingling
- Social outings & meet ups (ex: rock climbing, hiking, museum visits, etc.) where connections can be made
- Discussion meetings (on contemporary & current issues) to broaden our conversations and networks
- Community & Global Service events (relevant to Melbourne city) that practice other-centredness
- Exploring Worldview Series (with special guest speakers) that provoke dialogue and deeper convictions
- Special interest clubs (ex: Vegetarian Cooking, Parents Group, Book Club) to engage members and newcomers
We Value…
1. The Adventist message
We believe that the Bible presents a Gospel worldview that is practical, relevant, and that promotes spiritual, emotional, mental, physical, and relational well-being. Building upon the faithfulness of God and the response of His followers throughout the ages, the Seventh-day Adventist movement articulates this worldview for the 21st century.
2. The Melbourne culture
Our ministry takes place in a unique urban setting with its own culture, values and traditions. We are respectful of the ‘Melbourne culture’ and will do our best to express ourselves in ways that are compatible with that culture. However, operating from a position of respect for the city we live in, we may challenge some of the thoughts and ideas that we believe stand in the way of helping our fellow Melbournians have happier and more meaningful lives.
3. Open and enquiring minds
Our attitude is one of openness to different perspectives and ideas. We believe that if you allow people to question and explore their doubts and ideas, they will be more certain of their convictions. We recognise that people have enquiring minds that are keen to explore ideas and build their knowledge. As such we will ensure that our programs are rich in content and provide varied opportunities for learning.
4. A ‘priesthood of all believers’
We will engage anyone who is willing to be part of our community in helping to build that community. We believe that anyone can make a contribution to our community and that by working together we can achieve what none of us could achieve on his or her own.
5. User-friendly service
Many times, people walk into a church service and feel that it is a different planet from the world they live in during the week. We want the church service to be as user-friendly as possible, so that newcomers and regulars alike can engage with the service in a meaningful way.
6. Community
Belonging, care, accountability and spiritual growth happen best in authentic relationships. We will foster genuine community whenever we meet by allowing individuals the opportunity to actively listen to and dialogue with one another. We will prioritize relationships over programs and unity over agendas.
