Questions: ‘Am I my brother’s keeper?’ Accountability in an individualistic world.
These questions are a starting point to help spark discussion that digs deeper into today’s topic – feel free to adapt or add additional questions of your own.
- In what ways can individual actions have a wider impact on the community? What’s an example of how someone’s actions (good or bad) impacted you or others around you?
- How do you feel about the idea of accountability: do you see it as something positive and necessary, or do you find it challenging?
- Reflecting on the story of Cain and Abel, why do you think Cain chose to respond to God with, “Am I my brother’s keeper?” How does this attitude show up in our lives today?
- Cain’s indifference led him to isolation. How does indifference or neglect affect relationships and community? What might be some of the dangers of withdrawing when someone else needs care or support?
- Jesus modelled ultimate care for others by bearing our burdens and taking responsibility for us, even to the point of laying down His life (John 15:13 – click to read online). What does it look like for us to be “our brother’s keeper” in a practical, everyday sense?
- Living in community with accountability requires vulnerability. What does it mean to be vulnerable in relationships, and how does that contribute to a stronger, healthier community?
- Read Matthew 25:35-40 [click to read online]. How does this shape our understanding of how Jesus calls us to care for others?
- As we think about our role in supporting and holding each other accountable, how can we practically commit to this? Would you be willing to partner with someone in prayer, or commit to checking in with someone regularly for accountability?
