Discussion Questions for “Exploring God’s Mission through the Nations, Part 1: Israel, a Chosen Nation”

  1. What was meaningful to you from today’s sermon?
  2. How has following Jesus been a blessing to you personally? How could you share this blessing with nonbelievers in your circle of influence?
  3. Does the concept of being “chosen” burden or inspire you? What does it mean for God to “choose” an individual or a group?  Cf. Deuteronomy 18:1,5; Exodus 31:1-5; 1 Samuel 16:1
  4. What does it mean to bless someone?  Is blessing defined by the giver or the receiver?

Closing the Divide

My favourite moment in the U.S. Presidential Inauguration was when Amanda Gorman, aged 22, recited a powerful poem about unity (full video here):

We close the divide, because we know to put our future first,

We must first put our differences aside.

We lay down our arms

So we can reach out our arms to one another…

Scripture tells us to envision

That everyone shall sit under their own vine and fig tree,

And no one shall make them afraid.

If we’re to live up to our own time,

then victory won’t lie in the blade but in all the bridges we’ve made.

What a courageous call to come together.
