Discussion questions for “Learning to Let Go”

These questions are here to stimulate dialogue about today’s topic – feel free to skip around or discuss items not listed here.

1. Have you ever had an experience of feeling unnecessarily ‘managed’ (or micromanaged) by someone who didn’t want to give up control? (e.g. at work, or a family member or friend). What did this feel like? What was the outcome?

2. Read Hebrews 10:23-25. What stands out to you in this verse? How do we determine when to let go and when to hold on?

3. Can you think of any other examples from the Bible where, like Jacob, people have tried to control their circumstances and ended up at cross-purposes with God’s plans? Is ‘wrestling’ as Jacob did a necessary part of the experience/process?

4. Do you think it is always true that letting go can bring peace? Is it wrong to want to be in control of our life?

5. The sermon title – Learning to let go – indicates that this skill is something we can learn and get better at through practice and with patience. Are there any strategies you find helpful when you or someone close to you are feeling anxious or overwhelmed?

6. What are some practical ways we can build trust that will help outweigh our fears or anxieties?
