Discussion questions for “From Servant to Son”
These questions are here to stimulate dialogue about today’s topic – feel free to skip around or discuss items not listed here.
1. Think about a time you procrastinated – perhaps it was putting off making an important decision, or completing a particular task. How did you feel and what was the outcome?
2. In C. S. Lewis’ sermon ‘Learning in War-Time’, he said: “We are always falling in love or quarreling, looking for jobs or fearing to lose them, getting ill and recovering, following public affairs. If we let ourselves, we shall always be waiting for some distraction or other to end before we can really get down to our work. The only people who achieve much are those who want knowledge so badly that they seek it while the conditions are still unfavorable. Favorable conditions never come.” Can you relate to this quote? In what ways might the pursuit of perfection, or waiting for the perfect moment, hold us back from God’s will for our lives?
3. Do you think it’s possible or desirable for someone to change their personality? In what ways might being a Christian impact or interact with your personality type?
4. What are some expectations we might place on ourselves as individuals? Do you hold others to the same standards you expect of yourself?
5. How might your expectations (of yourself, or of others) change over time, and for what reasons might this occur?
6. What impact does believing God’s love and accepting forgiveness have on how we measure ourselves and our worth? How might this change our perspective and the ways in which we interact with other people?
7. Please share with each other something you’re grateful for from the week and something you’d like prayer for – then pray together as a group.
Thank you for coming today and contributing to our discussion.
‘Hello My Name Is’ by Matthew West
LYRICS
Hello, my name is regret
I’m pretty sure we have met
Every single day of your life
I’m the whisper inside
Won’t let you forget
Hello, my name is defeat
I know you recognize me
Just when you think you can win
I’ll drag you right back down again
‘Til you’ve lost all belief
These are the voices,
these are the lies
And I have believed them,
for the very last time
Hello, my name is child of the one true king
I’ve been saved, I’ve been changed, and I have been set free
Amazing grace is the song I sing
Hello, my name is child of the one true king
I am no longer defined
By all the wreckage behind
The one who makes all things new
Has proven it’s true
Just take a look at my life
Hello, my name is child of the one true king
I’ve been saved, I’ve been changed, and I have been set free
Amazing grace is the song I sing
Hello, my name is child of the one true king
What a love the Father has lavished upon us
That we should be called his children
I am a child of the one true King
What a love the Father has lavished upon us
That we should be called his children
Hello, my name is child of the one true king
I’ve been saved, I’ve been changed, and I have been set free
Amazing grace is the song I sing
Hello, my name is child of the one true king
I am a child of the one true king
