Discussion Questions 17 June 2023

Discussion Time 17 June 2023 “7 Reasons We Read the Bible Differently, Part 3: Understanding Historical & Literary Context”

  1. Have one volunteer read Matthew 14:13-21 out loud.
  2. Then have others read Mark 6:32-:44, Luke 9:10-17, and John 6:1-13.
  3. What difference does it make to this story to learn each of these historical facts ?
  • 200 denarii = 200 days’ pay for a day labourer
  • The Passover festival celebrated the exodus of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt
  • The Israelites had been fed by God in the wilderness with manna (“bread from heaven”) when they came out of Egypt as slaves
  • Jesus’ audience were familiar with Psalm 23
  • Barely was food for the animals ; the poor also ate barley loaves instead of wheat rolls
  • People rarely ate until they were full in Jesus’ days; they could not afford it.  They usually ate enough to keep from starvation.

4. What else can you learn from the story?

Thank you for coming today and contributing to our discussion.
