These questions are a starting point to help spark discussion that digs deeper into today’s topic – feel free to adapt or add additional questions of your own.
1. Today’s sermon begins with the idea that hope plays a vital role in survival. What are you currently hoping for? How does that hope influence your day-to-day choices?
2. Where does your mind most often dwell—past, present, or future? Read Matthew 6:34 [click to read online]. How do you see God at work in your current focus? What might it look like to live with a more balanced perspective?
3. Have you ever placed your hope in something that ultimately let you down? How do you discern the difference between false hope and the hope that comes from God, as described in Romans 15:13 [click to read online]?
4. What role does community play in helping us hold on during painful seasons? Can you think of a time when someone else’s encouragement made a difference in your faith journey?
5. The sermon described joy as flowing from gratitude, service, and sharing Christ. Which of these have you personally experienced bringing joy into your life? Is there one you feel called to lean into more right now?
6. Darrell used the image of our life as a grain of sand and eternity as the beach. What helps you to keep an eternal perspective when life feels overwhelming or you’re faced with challenges? What difference does it make to live as someone who has already been given victory?
7. Reflect on Hebrews 10:23-24 [click to read online]. What is one tangible way you can hold on to hope this week—for yourself or for someone else? Could it be through prayer, a kind word, encouragement, or an act of service?
