Discussion questions for “The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry”

These questions are here to stimulate dialogue about today’s topic – feel free to skip around or discuss items not listed here.

1. How much of a problem is “hurry” for you personally? Have there been times in your life when you have experienced this more or less? What would life look like if you were not as hurried?

2. What do you think healthy busy-ness looks like, compared to what unhealthy busy-ness might look like? How do you determine what is healthy vs unhealthy, and might this differ between individuals?

3. In a typical week, where do you tend to spend your time? How does this align with your priorities and values? How much choice do we have over what takes up our time and is it realistic to think hurry is something we can eliminate?

4. Pastor and author John Ortberg describes the great danger for Christians is the risk that “we will just skim our lives instead of actually living them.” What do you think it means to “skim our lives”? How might you better orientate your life around the life of Jesus?

5. In Matthew 11:28-30, Jesus says: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” What stands out to you in this passage?

6. What would it look like to slow down in your own life? What’s one thing you can do this week to reduce “hurry” and claim the peace that Jesus promises?
