Discussion questions for “How was the Bible written?”
These questions are here to stimulate dialogue about today’s topic – feel free to skip around or discuss items not listed here.
1. Think of a time you taught someone something, or left instructions for someone to follow. How did you convey the message you were trying to communicate? How could you tell whether what you said had been received and successfully put into practice?
2. Why is it important to be aware of why people might interpret the Bible differently, and to understand the reasons why? Do you think God intended for us to have different interpretations?
3. Throughout history, God has revealed himself to people through dreams, visions, angels, direct speech and symbols. What are some examples of these that come to mind from the Bible? Why do you think God might have chosen that specific method for that particular context?
4. 2 Timothy 3:14-16 describes both the power and the purpose of the Bible, as God’s message to and for us. What stands out to you the most in this passage? Do you feel you currently look to the Bible for all the reasons mentioned here?
5. The disciples had opportunity to be ‘eyewitnesses of his majesty’, and hear God’s voice directly. In 2 Peter 1:16-21, we read about the role of revelation and inspiration and what this looks like for someone communicating and reflecting God’s will. Why do you think Bible writers such as Peter felt so compelled to record what they had witnessed? How does Peter characterise his role in communicating God’s will?
6. The Bible reflects God’s voice to us, told through the voices of many writers. Why do you think God chose different perspectives to represent his message and share his words with future generations?
