Discussion Questions for “Growing in Grace, Part 3”

These questions are here to stimulate dialogue about today’s topic – feel free to skip around or discuss items not listed below.

Thank you for coming today and contributing to our discussion!

  1. How much do you need to know about God to pray? Anything?
  2. Have you ever had someone pray for/with you and it made a difference? How did it impact you?
  3. Have you ever felt God prompting you to pray for someone? Did you follow through?  Why or why not?
  4. Why do we need to pray for each other? Is there more “power” if more people pray?
  5. Here are some biblical examples of intercessors: Abraham prayed for the people of Sodom to
be spared (Genesis 18:20-33), Isaac prayed for his wife to get pregnant (Genesis 25:21),
Moses prayed for the sins of the Israelites to be forgiven (Exodus 17:10-12), Jesus prayed for
Simon’s faith not to fail (Luke 22:31,32), the early Church prayed for Peter in prison (Acts 12:5),the believers prayed for Paul (Ephesians 6:1-20). Pick one of these stories (or another onethat comes to mind) and look at why they prayed, how they prayed, and how God answered. What do you learn/find interesting?
  6. Sometimes we pray for people but nothing seems to happen. Should we keep praying? What,
    if anything, needs to change?
  7. What are some of the blessings of community?  Some of the challenges? Why is it important belong to a church community?

Quotes about prayer:
”Prayer is the best response to hatred.”—Charles Spurgeon.

“We never know how God will answer our prayers, but we can expect that He will get us
involved in His plan for the answer. If we are true intercessors, we must be ready to take
part in God’s work on behalf of the people for whom we pray.” ― Corrie ten Boom

“True intercession involves bringing the person, or the circumstance that seems to be
crashing in on you, before God, until you are changed by His attitude toward that person
or circumstance. People describe intercession by saying, “It is putting yourself in someone
else’s place.” That is not true! Intercession is putting yourself in God’s place; it is having
His mind and His perspective.” ― Oswald Chambers

“Prayer is the breath of the soul. It is the secret of spiritual power. No other means of grace
can be substituted and the health of the soul be preserved. Prayer brings the heart into
immediate contact with the Wellspring of life, and strengthens the sinew and muscle of the
religious experience. Neglect the exercise of prayer, or engage in prayer spasmodically,
now and then, as seems convenient, and you lose your hold on God. The spiritual faculties
lose their vitality, the religious experience lacks health and vigor” – Ellen G White
