The Last Will be First
Home Worship 4 February, 2023
Watch 5-min video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-UenIDevpI
Then Discuss:
- What does it mean to have power? To be in power? Is it about position, authority, influence or something else? Who has power in our society? Do they have real authority?
- Read Matthew 20:20-28 together. Why are the 10 disciples mad at the two brothers? What does Jesus say to those who want the rights and power that come with being “first”?
- The God of the Bible opposes lots of human ideas about power, such as the privilege of the firstborn (Genesis 4:1-5; 17:15-21; 25:21-26). Again and again, God chooses younger siblings and people we don’t expect to be His chosen representatives. Why do you think God does this?
- Read Hebrews 12 out loud as a group, paying special attention to verses 23-24. How is Jesus the firstborn of a new creation? What does it mean to be part of the church of the “firstborn”?
- Read Philippians 2:1-11. What does it look like to have the mind of Christ?
- Jesus and other prophets were often not in positions of actual power – you were perfectly free to ignore what they said and go on with your life. So what kind of authority does Jesus actually have in the world? Over us?
- What part of today’s discussion/readings has challenged/inspired/troubled you the most? Why?
Pray together to close, sharing requests either as a large group or in smaller groups of 2-3.
