Discussion Questions 2 Nov 2024

These questions are here to stimulate dialogue about today’s topic – feel free to skip around or discuss items not listed below.

  1. What was most memorable for you from the sermon (whether you liked or disliked it)?
  2. Share a time when you had to rely on someone else for something you normally wouldn’t ask help for. How did it make you feel?
  3. In Matthew 5:3-6, Jesus describes the “blessed” as those who are vulnerable—the poor in spirit, those who mourn, the meek, and those who hunger and thirst for righteousness. Why do you think Jesus emphasised vulnerability in His teachings? How does this contrast with cultural views of strength?
  4. In Luke 9:1-6, Jesus sent His disciples out with nothing except authority and a mission. What do you think He wanted them to learn from this experience of dependence? How might that apply to us today?
  5. Brene Brown suggests that attaching self-worth to being a “helper” can lead to feeling shame when we need help ourselves. Why else do we struggle to ask for help, even if we’re willing to give it? Why do you think vulnerability is such a challenge for many people?
  6. Jesus asked His disciples to stay with Him in Gethsemane, even though He knew they couldn’t fully understand His struggle. What could it look like in your own life to seek support when facing a difficult time?
  7. What specific area in your life could you bring to God in prayer, or even ask others for help with?

Thank you for coming today and contributing to our discussion.
