How to Have Meaningful Prayer

How to Have Meaningful Prayer

  1. (5 min) Refine your picture of God – reflect on this passage (read it several times, think about what each word is saying).

1 Peter 5:6,7

Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.  Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

  1. (5 min) Spend time in praise – you can praise God for His attributes that you most appreciate or admire or you can praise through the alphabet – think of words that describe God starting with each letter of the alphabet – for example:

A: Almighty, amazing, awesome, all-powerful, all-knowing

B: Benevolent, bright, beautiful

C: Creator, Consuming fire

D: Deliverer, Defender,

E: Everlasting, Emmanuel

F: Father, forgiver, faithful, fortress

G: Giver, Good shepherd, glorious, Gentle, Gracious

  1. (10 min) Pray to God without saying any thank-yous or requests. Tell God how you’re feeling right now – what are you anxious about? What are you looking forward to? What’s discouraging or frustrating you? Without making requests, simply tell God what’s on your mind, as you would to a friend.
