‘I Am the Resurrection and the Life’

“I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying.
Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never ever die. Do you believe this?”
— John 11:25–26, NLT

These questions are a starting point to help spark discussion that digs deeper into today’s topic – feel free to adapt or add additional questions of your own.

1. Read John 11:5–6 aloud. The passage says Jesus loved Mary, Martha and Lazarus – and yet he delayed. What does that tension tell us about how God’s love sometimes works?

2. Jesus says, “I am the resurrection and the life” (v. 25). He doesn’t say “I will bring resurrection” or “I will give life.” Why does that distinction matter? What does it change about how you relate to him in times of loss?

3. John 11:35 is the shortest verse in the Bible: “Jesus wept.” Jesus already knew he was about to raise Lazarus. Why do you think he wept anyway? What does this reveal about Jesus?

4. When Lazarus emerged from the tomb, he was still wrapped in his grave clothes. Jesus told the crowd to unwrap him. In what ways might believers still be “wrapped in grave clothes” after coming to faith? What role does the church community play in “unwrapping” one another?

5. Jesus’s question to Martha was personal: “Do you believe this?” (v. 26). How would you answer that question honestly today – not just theologically, but in terms of how you are actually living?

6. Is there an area of your life that feels like it’s “four days dead”: something you’ve stopped expecting God to work in? How might Jesus’s words to Martha speak into that situation?
