Discussion Questions for 9 March 2024 “Pivotal Moments”

These questions are here to stimulate dialogue about today’s topic – feel free to skip around or discuss items not listed here.

  1. Ruth’s decision to follow Naomi to Bethlehem was a significant act of faith. Reflect on a time when you had to step out in faith, even when the future seemed uncertain. What did you learn from that experience, and how did it shape your relationship with God?
  2. The concept of redemption is central to the story of Ruth. Read Ephesians 1:7,8: “In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace that he lavished on us.” What does it mean that we have been “redeemed” by Jesus?
  3. How do you perceive the role of personal agency versus divine intervention in the process of redemption? Consider Ruth’s proactive steps towards securing her future with Boaz as well as the evident unfolding of God’s plan for her life. How does this duality inform our understanding of how God redeems us today? Are there instances in our lives where we must act, like Ruth, to receive God’s redemption, or is our redemption entirely orchestrated by God?
  4. How can we experience and extend God’s redemptive power and grace, in our own spheres of influence as a church?
  5. The genealogy at the end of the book traces the lineage of King David, highlighting Ruth’s integral role in the lineage of Jesus Christ. How does understanding our spiritual heritage impact our perspective on God’s faithfulness and provision?
