Emmanuel : God With Us

Today as we reflect on the meaning of God with us, here are some questions to consider:

  1. What’s one Christmas tradition—serious or silly—that you’ve always enjoyed?

  2. When you think of Christmas, what’s the first word or image that comes to mind?

  3. If you could describe this year in one word as Christmas approaches, what would it be?

  4. When the world feels heavy, what do you usually do: distract yourself, talk it through, or sit quietly with it?
  5. Why do you think “Do not be afraid” shows up so often in the Christmas story?
  6. What does “God with us” sound like to you—comforting, challenging, confusing, or hopeful? Why?
  7. How is Christmas (or the birth of Jesus) a sign that God hasn’t abandoned the world?

  8. What’s one small way someone could reflect Emmanuel—God with us—to another person this week?

Thank you for coming & sharing!

Discussion Questions 13 December 2025

These questions are a starting point to help spark discussion that digs deeper into today’s topic – feel free to adapt or add additional questions of your own.

  1. What stood out to you from the sermon today?
  2. Where are you currently in a “waiting season”? What does waiting feel like for you right now?
  3. Read Luke 2:25-32 and Psalm 130:-16. What stands out to you about how Simeon waited for God’s promise?
  4. The sermon described Advent as not a story of self-improvement, control, or fixing ourselves, but of God interrupting history. In what ways do we still try to “fix” our waiting instead of inhabiting it? How might this resistance prevent us from experiencing hope?
  5. What is one feeling you’ve been hesitant to bring honestly to God? What might change if you named it in prayer this week without trying to fix it?

‘Can These Bones Live?’

These questions are a starting point to help spark reflection and conversation on today’s message. Feel free to adapt or add your own.

1. Think about a time when your faith felt tired or distant. What did God use to renew your spirit?

2. God asked Ezekiel to speak life over dry bones. What does speaking hope look like in your relationships, workplace or community?

3. Jesus says in John 6:63, “The words I have spoken to you are spirit and life.” How have you experienced God’s Word or God’s Spirit bringing life to you this year, especially in moments of challenge?

4. Ezekiel needed to personally participate to access God’s restorative power. What areas of your life feel in need of renewal? What’s an action you feel called to take in response?

5. What’s one insight or idea that has impacted you today that you’d like to hold onto or put into practice as we finish the year?
